Red lentil dhal


Think your children won’t eat lentils?  think again……my son was quite annoyed that I had “made him” like lentils when he was pretty sure he wasn’t meant to!


1 onion diced

2 cloves garlic chopped

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp garam masala

1/2 – 1 tsp dried chilli flakes

2 tbs olive oil

1 cup red lentils

800 g tin tomatoes (put in blender and blend until no lumps)

3 cups vegetable stock

1 tsp sugar

salt & pepper

fresh coriander chopped

1 cup greek yoghurt mixed with 1 tbs chopped fresh mint to serve


In a large heavy based frypan, sauté onion until soft.  Add garlic, turmeric, garam masala and chilli flakes, continue sautéing for another 1-2 mins.

Add rinsed red lentils to pan and stir to coat.

Add tomatoes, stock, sugar.  Simmer for approx 1 hour (you will need to stir frequently and add water from time to time) until lentils  are soft and liquid reduced.

Season with salt & pepper, stir through coriander.

Serve with steamed white rice, yoghurt sauce, flatbread or pappadams.
